Doc Holliday is an untold story. A shootist and mankiller, Holliday was widely known across the West. He was a mysterious figure who lived with a gun at his side. With all the stories of the Old West, Holliday seems to breeze through them with ease. People feared his name in boomtowns and mining camps from the Dakotas to Texas. His cunning personality and deadly personality overshadowed some of the best, even Wyatt Earp. He was a gunfighter who accepted any challenge, and never lost. There is far not enough credit given to Holliday for his story, but why is he such a mystery? This is the story of how a well known dentist known as Dr. John H. Holliday was transformed into the Doc Holliday of legend.

One introduction just isn’t enough. He was one of the coolest killers ever to hold a gun and quite the gambler. Holliday was a con man dodging all the passes the law threw at him. For all these reasons, many times he was marked as not a good man. This is very much true, but I am here to write about his bad side because that is what makes him famous. Doc Holliday was good at many other things. Some see him as a bad person, others as an inspiration. He was good at making his own way under circumstances that would seem impossible. He was good at following his own course, unswayed by public attitudes. He was good at keeping faith in his friends and respect towards others. He was a swift and classy guy. Something I like about Doc Holliday is that he was also good at accepting facts without thinking twice. Even though this is the start of my project, there is a commonality between the guys I am researching. They are not afraid of death and stay true to dignity they have set for themselves.

Doc Holliday’s criminal story started in Texas. At this time, around 1872, the West was a bonanza with lots of hussle and bussle, seeing it was a fairly undiscovered place. It was a place where anything could happen. Holliday settled in Dallas. He knew about the inflation and the amount of people flocking to the west. The perfect place to start a dentist business. Living in Dallas meant only a place where he could survive for a while if he was careful. The only thing in his way was his poor health. Even with a doctors notes couldn’t keep from moving. He was determined. Doc was not a dentist for long. He used it to his advantage as a way to gain people’s trust in the booming community. Holliday stayed still for a few months before his brother was able to join him in Dallas. Once his brother joined him, they were free to move and commit crimes. The official beginning of Doc’s crimes started with a robbery of the San Antonio stage. It was well planned and successfully executed before the Holliday brothers swung north to Missouri. There, they met up with the Younger Trio, also known in Dallas. Together the gangsters played along by being model citizens. They made their way back to Dallas where Doc was welcomed at his own level. He was the kind of man with the taste for excitement. Social pleasures just didn’t satisfy him. It was said of him that he was a good dentist. He once made a confession to Wyatt Earp that only when he was in a fight or working on teeth did he cease to be nervous. After committing enough small crimes around town, Doc lost his license to clean teeth. Known as a con man and gambler, he was called an “artist”. His story is only beginning.
